Allied Bakeries' premium Kingsmill brand pre-packed bread rolls were recently the subject of a review of their packaging, designed to enhance the quality image of the product. A special Fasson self-adhesive label construction provided the solution– and gave novel added value to the pack.
Part of the Associated British Foods Group, Allied Bakeries needed to take all the elements of the product's packaging into account – including the capabilities production line machinery installed in their manufacturing bakeries.
'It was a complex operation', says Allied Bakeries' Packaging Buyer, Christine Ensell. 'We wanted to provide the consumer with a reclosure mechanism so that unused rolls could be stored quickly and easily in their original packaging. We identified the self-adhesive pack label as the best method of achieving this.'
Working with their main label suppliers, Multiprint Labels Ltd of Dublin, the speciality labelstock supply arm of Avery Dennison Fasson Roll Europe, Fasson Select, and their film wrap suppliers, Allied Bakeries trialled a number of label and substrate combinations, both in the laboratory and on their packaging lines.
'The labels had to meet a pretty tough set of parameters', says Christine Ensell. 'The performance of the adhesive was critical. The label had to adhere to the pack for its in-store shelf life, but peel easily when the
consumer wanted to use it as a seal. It also had to perform effectively having been in the freezer.'
The Fasson Select product portfolio came up with the winning solution: Fasson PE100 White UVR145 -- a special label construction with an added 'dry-track' area for use as an adhesive-free 'fingerlift' tab -- which met all Allied Bakeries' criteria.
Multiprint Labels printed the Fasson labelstock in 6 colours, plus varnish, on their Gallus R300 press.
